Fivestars

Chances are you’ve seen Fivestars in a restaurant or coffee shop. From a merchant perspective, Fivestars has built a robust marketing and customer loyalty platform.

Pros of Fivestars

Right off the bat, let’s get into what makes Fivestars stand out.

They’ve got longevity in the market. When it comes to building customer loyalty and engagement software, they’re certainly one of the first and more prolific players in the space. They’ve been around for quite some time, and they’ve got a huge team.

The Fivestars platform’s core set of features also work pretty well: automated messaging, text messaging, and rewards features.

Ease of use. We gotta admit, Fivestars is pretty dang easy to use! It has a very attractive, modern look and feel, and the product itself is very intuitive for even the least tech-savvy owners to use.

Lastly, Fivestars comes with some POS system integrations — which if that’s a requirement for small business owners to have, then Fivestars might be the way to go.

Cons of Fivestars

Fivestars does come with a few drawbacks (as most things do). First and foremost, let's talk about the high price tag and onerous contract terms. While they don't list their price on their website, we have seen that it can cost anywhere from 200 - 350/month. In our opinion, it doesn't give you enough for its monthly pricing.

They also want you to sign long-term contracts with auto-renew terms. One of the most common complaints about Fivestars is the long-term contract and auto-renewal terms. Just make sure that you fully understand all the various contractual obligations before signing the contract.

One other thing to consider when it comes to contracts. If Fivestars were confident about the value their product offered, would they have to ask you to sign a one year contract that has convoluted auto-renewal terms? They force you into a contract because they know their product isn't worth the price they charge.

Fivestars is not a custom branded application — meaning that when your customers engage with the loyalty program, it will have Fivestars branding and not your branding. That might be a turn-off for some business owners who struggle to get their customers to sign up for another service.

Customers technically opt into Fivestars. Your customers are signing up for Fivestars, not your business. This means down the line if Fivestars wants to promote your competitors to your customers, they are well within their rights to do that. Even after you cancel your account with Fivestars, Fivestars can still message your customers.

Loyalti — a delightfully simple loyalty program

Loyalti is a rewards program designed for busy small business owners. Its primary focus is on giving owners a custom-branded experience while still being delightfully easy to use, so you can expect to see a simple loyalty program with only the tools you need to generate repeat foot traffic.

Pros of Loyalti

Right off the bat, let’s get into what makes Fivestars stand out.

They’ve got longevity in the market. When it comes to building customer loyalty and engagement software, they’re certainly one of the first and more prolific players in the space. They’ve been around for quite some time, and they’ve got a huge team.

Flexible customization. Loyalti can reward customers based on point per item, per visit, multiple punch cards (one for coffee, one for sandwiches for example) as well as point per dollar. Allows for tiered rewards as well. It offers greater flexibility based on your business type rather than just being stuck with a punch card style rewards program.

Custom branding. Perhaps one of the best parts about Loyalti rewards program is that it doesn’t look like Loyalti’s brand, but the brand of the business! Your customers trust you and your brand, this means more people sign up to your rewards program.

No cross-promotion of your competitors. Loyalti also doesn’t cross-promote businesses. When customers sign up to your loyalty program, they’re opting into communications from you — no one else; not even Loyalti.

Affordable pricing. Loyalti was built and designed for small business owners by small business owners — including restaurant owners, coffee shop owners, bubble tea and ice cream shops. Loyalti charges a flat-rate per location ($99/month) without any caps or limits on how many users you can have or loyalty rewards you give to customers.

No contracts or tricky terms. You don’t need a law degree to understand what you’re getting with Loyalti and what it means to be a customer. Loyalti doesn’t do contracts at all, and there’s certainly no dodgy terms and renewal conditions to worry about. Cancel anytime.

Marketing capabilities you’d expect. What makes Loyalti compelling for small business owners is that it has all of the marketing capabilities you’d expect. For example, owners can setup automated marketing campaigns and send any combination of text messages and emails.

White-glove customer service. Loyalti is a small business itself, so we get how important customer service is. We are here to provide you with white glove customer service whenever you need it over the phone, text messaging or email.

Ease of use. We gotta admit, Fivestars is pretty dang easy to use! It has a very attractive, modern look and feel, and the product itself is very intuitive for even the least tech-savvy owners to use.

Cons of Loyalti

No POS integrations. If integration with your POS system is an absolute must, then Loyalti might not be the solution for you. The price, however, makes sense given the lack of POS integrations. There’s dozens of POS systems, and building out each of those integrations naturally adds to the price of the platform.

Don’t have an acquisition network. Loyalti doesn’t come with a network for customers to find other businesses, but that’s because recommendation networks don’t work. Google and Yelp are the top ways for potential customers to find your business, so if you’re interested in net new customer acquisition, Google and Yelp will be your primary channels — not an acquisition network.

No mobile app. At this time, Loyalti does not have a mobile app. Customers still can check their points online, however. Part of this is due to the shift in customer behavior away from apps over the past 5 years.

An honest comparison chart

Here’s the thing — we hate skewed, biased comparison charts as much as the next person. Thankfully, this chart wasn’t written by a marketer, so you can expect a no-holds-barred look at Fivestars versus Loyalti.
